2019-2020 Electives

  • We appreciate everyone's patience in finalizing this year's schedule.
  • Although the below information below has been reviewed for accuracy, please note that electives are subject to change.
  • Please note that 2 week and even 1 week electives are being considered this year.
  • If there is interest, it may be possible to extend some electives into a full 4 weeks.
  • Please appreciate that some of these rotations have never been done, and as such, they may not quite be ready or perfectly run.
  • If there is a rotation you are interested in that is not listed, please ask and we will do our best to accommodate.
  • Please note that some choices may be limited by vacation.

Established Electives

Allergy

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: 425 University
  • Preceptor: Dr. Bose
  • Level: Any
  • Notes:
    • Well reviewed in the past by multiple residents
    • Planned/scheduled 2 week rotation as PGY3

Cardiology Clinic

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: 300 University Clinic
  • Preceptor: Dr. Divakaran
  • Level: Any; Recommend PGY2 and above
  • Notes:
    • Unavailable Jan-June due to required PGY3 rotation
    • FM PGY1 rotates heavily in the clinic July-Dec
    • Echo elective also previously discussed as an option
    • Planned/scheduled 4 week rotation as PGY3

Gastroenterology

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: RRH and 300 University Clinic
  • Preceptor: Dr. Nguyen
  • Level: Any
  • Notes:
    • Unavailable Jan-June due to required PGY2 rotation
    • Extremely well run rotation
    • Exposure to hospital consults and clinic
    • May be expected to do MKSAP questions
    • Planned/scheduled 4 week rotation as PGY2

Hematology/Oncology

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: Cancer Center
  • Preceptor: Dr. Khan
  • Level: Any
  • Notes:
    • Unavailable Jan-June due to required PGY2 rotation
    • May be more limited July-Dec due to 2 week PGY3 rotation
    • Exclusively outpatient
    • Extremely well run rotation
    • Planned/scheduled 4 week rotation as PGY2
    • Planned/scheduled 2 week rotation July-Dec as PGY3 currently

IM Ambulatory Clinic

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: Variable. 425 University most available currently. GT clinic has been full.
  • Preceptor: Dr. Kathpalia currently
  • Level: Any
  • Notes:
    • Multiple planned/scheduled rotations PGY1-PGY3
    • Residents have requested specific providers, but this has been difficult to guarantee
    • Exclusively outpatient

Infectious Disease

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: RRH
  • Preceptor: Dr. Tran
  • Level: Any
  • Notes:
    • May be more limited July-Dec due to 2 week PGY3 rotation
    • Almost exclusively inpatient consults
    • Usually relaxed with plenty of time to see patients and read
    • Dr. T shares a lot of good literature
    • Planned/scheduled 2 week rotation July-Dec as PGY3 currently

Nephrology

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: RRH and RR Dialysis Center (By Kerby Lane/Fuddrucker's
  • Preceptor: Dr. McClean
  • Level: Any
  • Notes:
    • May be more limited July-Dec due to 2 week PGY3 rotation
    • Mostly inpatient consults with good exposure to dialysis
    • Well reviewed by prior residents
    • Only done by IM PGY1s last year
    • Planned/scheduled 2 week rotation July-Dec as PGY3 currently

Pulmonary Clinic

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: 300 University Clinic
  • Preceptor: ??? Dr. Salgado vs Dr. Goraya
  • Level: Any
  • Notes:
    • Unavailable July-Dec due to required FM PGY1 rotation
    • May be limited Jan-June due to 2 week PGY3 rotation
    • Outpatient with good exposure to technicians/spirometry
    • Well reviewed by prior residents
    • Only Matt has done from IM
    • Planned/scheduled 2 week rotation Jan-June as PGY3 currently

Research

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: Your choice
  • Preceptor: Need to name a supervisor
  • Level: PGY2 and above
  • Notes:
    • Very popular & relaxed/chill rotation
    • Clinic attendance still expected
    • Expected to attend to morning report and noon conference
    • Will need to produce a summary of how you spent your time by the end of the rotation

Urgent Care

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: North Burnet Clinic (near The Domain)
  • Preceptor: Dr. Desai
  • Level: Any
  • Notes:
    • This is a new elective
    • Devina is currently taking
    • May require extended hours and weekend shifts
    • Will still have at least the same number of days off total
    • No morning report attendance expected
    • Remote noon conference attendance
    • Clinic attendance expected

Unestablished/New or Proposed Electives

Anesthesia

  • Duration: 1-2 weeks
  • Location: RRH
  • Preceptor: TBD
  • Level: TBD. Likely PGY3 only initially
  • Notes:
    • No one has taken yet
    • May ultimately just end up being part of the Procedures Elective
    • We do not have a primary contact within the department AFAIK

Dermatology

  • Duration: 2+ weeks
  • Location: 425 University
  • Preceptor: TBD
  • Level: TBD. Likely Any
  • Notes:
    • No one has taken yet
    • Currently scheduled 1 week PGY3 rotation Jan-June

Informatics

  • Duration: ~1 week
  • Location: 425 University
  • Preceptor: TBD. Dr. Chang?
  • Level: TBD. Likely PGY2+
  • Notes:
    • Likely best paired with 1 week pathology
    • No one has taken yet
    • In anticipation of the proposed Informatics Fellowship

Inpatient

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: RRH. Possibly LWH.
  • Preceptor: TBD. Likely Dr. Gajjar
  • Level: PGY2 and above
  • Notes:
    • Hospitalist rotation working 1 on 1 with attending
    • Will take requests, but cannot guarantee working with a specific attending

Lakeway ED

  • Duration: 2-4 weeks
  • Location: LWH
  • Preceptor: TBD
  • Level: PGY2 and above. Might consider PGY1 as a future option
  • Notes:
    • Really only in the planning stages, but we can look into this if there is more interest in ED
    • Currently not enough availability to support additional rotations at RRH, but that may change in near future

Pathology

  • Duration: ~1 week
  • Location: 425 University
  • Preceptor: TBD. Pathologist involved in the Informatics Fellowship
  • Level: TBD. Likely PGY2 and above
  • Notes:
    • No one has taken yet
    • Likely best paired with 1 week informatics, in anticipation of the proposed fellowship
    • Can consider trying general pathology or blood bank elective if there is interest

Procedures

  • Duration: 1-2 weeks
  • Location: RRH
  • Preceptor: TBD
  • Level: PGY3 only
  • Notes:
    • No one has taken yet
    • Currently in development
    • Likely to be some type of combination of anesthesia, interventional radiology, or interventional cardiology

Radiology

  • Duration: 1-2 weeks
  • Location: RRH
  • Preceptor: TBD
  • Level: TBD. Likely PGY2 and above
  • Notes:
    • No one has taken yet
    • Really only in planning stages right now
    • Currently have contacts within the department, but they have been difficult to engage

Unavailable Electives

Endocrinology

  • Required ACGME rotation
  • Currently 4 weeks scheduled for PGY2 Jan-July
  • Department currently understaffed
  • Attendings have changed their locations
  • Rotation Preceptor just had a baby as well
  • Were among the most receptive departments initially, but currently just don't have the resources
  • FM is no longer doing this year because of this

Geriatrics

  • Required ACGME rotation
  • Currently scheduled FM PGY2 4 week rotation June-Dec
  • Currently scheduled IM PGY3 4 week rotation Jan-July
  • Dr. Carlson has been very popular with great resident reviews
  • Availability is somewhat limited because of this and due to already scheduled rotations
  • May have availability working with other practitioners? Has not been looked into, but likely can if there is interest.

Neurology

  • Required ACGME rotation
  • Currently 2 weeks scheduled for PGY3
  • Will likely be an option in the future
  • Will reassess after PGY3s complete their rotations
  • Department has been very welcoming

Rheumatology

  • Required ACGME rotation
  • Currently 2 weeks scheduled for PGY3
  • Unfortunately department has been "short-staffed" and difficult to engage
  • Program is hopeful that they will be more receptive to more residents once PGY3s start rotating
